Honey can be harvested from the Warré hive as often as desired. However because it is always best to limit interventions within the hive, Warré advised only one harvest at the end of August, or later, at the beginning of September. The winter stores can be sorted at the same time as taking the annual harvest.
Each Warré hive will need 26.5 lbs (12 kg) of honey left in the hive for winter stores. A full fixed comb in the standard Warré hive contains 4.4 lbs (2 kg) of honey. Therefore the equivalent of six full fixed combs stocked with honey on both sides will be enough winter stores left in the hive.
Insufficient winter stores put the bees' lives in danger or will necessitate feeding. See the link at the bottom of this page for information on fall feeding
Too much honey left as winter stores is also harmful, because bees do not winter on the cold and humid honey, but below it. As a result, the more honey stored, the more significant is the empty space to be heated above the bees.
Place the remaining hive boxes on the hive floor in the warm-way winter orientation. In the warm-way orientation the combs are perpendicular to the walls to the right and left of the hive. In this orientation the air coming in by the entrance meets the combs and cools the hive less rapidly.
